MTN recently added Vodocom Tanzania and Tigo Tanzania to its list of telecommunication partners with whom its customers can do mobile money transactions in the East African region.

MTN customers can now send mobile money to Tigo Pesa, Vodocom Tanzania, Safaricom (Kenya), Eco Cash (Burundi) — as well as MTN Rwanda.

This therefore allows MTN customers in the East African region to easily send and receive money across the region without the need of using informal money transfers channels such as bus drivers and bus attendants or using relatives and friends traveling to send the money. Thereby, with these partnership will enable people to safely, easily, affordably and conveniently carry out money transactions.

MTN has been at the forefront of financial innovation pioneering in the delivery of a wide range of financial services such as micro savings, loans, insurance and merchant payments through MoMoPay.

To send money across the region, an MTN Uganda customer begins by dialing *165*1*2# and selects their preferred destination. The customer enters the recipient’s phone number and the amount to send. The sender receives a summary including; the amount they are sending, the Forex rates of the day, and the amount the recipient will get. Finally a pin prompt to confirm the transaction. Once s/he confirms their pin, the money is then sent and with the Forex it converts to the country’s currency.

Summarizing How to Send Money Using MTN Mobile Money Across East Africa Region: From Uganda perspective —;

  1. Dial *165*1*2# or use the MTN MoMo application and select the preferred destination where you ought to send the money to.
  2. You’re then prompted to enter the recipient’s number, then the amount you’re sending (the money will be automatically converted from the sender’s country currency to the recipient’s country currency).
  3. You will then receive a summary of the processing transaction; including the amount you are sending, the Forex rates of the day (coverts what you’re sending basing on the day’s Forex rates), and the amount the recipient will be receiving.
