Third Winners of MoMoPay Trolley Dash, Rewarded

Telecommunication firm, MTN Uganda has on Saturday morning rewarded its third group of winners who have embraced paying for their goods and services using their cashless mobile payment platform, MTN MoMoPay.

Launched last month, the telco said it will reward 20 of its lucky customers each given 60 seconds (one minute) to shop what they desired. So far, 15 customers are rewarded and the final five to be announced next week.

Mr. Ali Monzer; General Manager Mobile Financial Services at MTN Uganda told reporters that, they are giving back to their customers using MoMoPay to pay for their good or services.

“Our customers have appreciated the convenience of having to pay for all their goods and services using MoMo Pay. Thus, we felt the need to thank them by giving back to them and that’s why we launched this promotion.”

PC Tech Magazine comes to understand that the campaign is for everyone, even to those that transact as less as UGX1,000. MTN Uganda has faced a number of blacklash accused that only those that transact higher benefit from their campaigns. Not only MoMoPay campaigns but at most, all their campaigns claiming a group of people are selected to win. However, MTN has dismissed all claims stating that their competitions are for everyone. And a few campaigns for a target group if necessary.

Meanwhile, the third group of winners were invited at Shoprite Supermarket, Clock Tower branch. Each given a minute to shop what they desired, from electronics, food, clothing, utensils, to mention a few.

While briefing the winners, MTN Uganda Regional Marketing Coordinator; Mr. Jimmy Ssempuuma asked winners to shop responsibly as anything damaged or destroyed is accounted to them. He asked winners to be confident and not shop under pressure.

The five winners were; Masereka Yahaya Saad, Wilson Mwine Mukuru, Wahab Bakaine and Ronald Mpanga.

Earlier MoMoPay trolley dash were held at Fraine Supermarket in Ntinda and Cynibel Supermarket in Bunga and the final will be at Kenjoy supermarket.

MoMoPay is almost two years old since its introduction in Uganda. And so far over 80,000+ merchants from supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants, hardware shops, fuel stations, among others are registered to the platform.

MomoPay is to combat the pain experience by customers while making transactions. The telco through MomoPay is simplifying financial transactions by enabling people transact comfortably and conveniently using their mobile phones.

“With the introduction of MomoPay, we’re changing the game. When customers want to purchase for goods, they will pay the exact amount they would have done with cash without incurring any other charges. This is because with MomoPay, there’s absolutely no cost to the customer,” MTN Uganda CEO, Wim Vanhelleputte told reporters at time of launch in 2018.

How to use MoMoPay
The customer pays for their good or service using MTN mobile money sending the payment to the merchant’s 6-digit number.

Dial *165*3#, press the ok/yes key to initiate payment. From the dialog box that pops up, insert in the merchants 6-digit number.

Inset in the price you owe and confirm payment using your MTN mobile money number. Completion is done.

The above process differs from merchants with Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals like; supermarkets. What happens? In this case,

  1. Using the scenario of Shoprite, from the POS machine, the option to pay using MomoPay is option 2.
  2. Once selected, it will prompt for your mobile phone number.
  3. Then confirm payment from your phone using your mobile money pin.
