Facebook-owned messaging platform; WhatsApp is working on adding a new tab for “Add group description” in a group with placement depending on whether the viewer is part of the group or not. The debut is still in beta testing for Android and Windows Communities, and is expected to be available on iOS in the coming days.

Any member in the group can reportedly edit the text in the new group description tab, although WhatsApp might be looking to restrict access to admins in future updates.

The maximum character limit for group descriptions has been set to 500 characters.

The feature will help new members get a brief sense of a group’s purpose and activities before joining it.

Notably, the feature isn’t working for everyone, and may be a limited test. We were unable to access the new group description feature at first despite being on the beta community for Android. However, we managed to test the feature, as seen in the pics below.

Like we mentioned earlier before, the feature will allow group members to edit group description. However, we can expect that WhatsApp will restrict access to only group admins in the future. This will offer a certain level of moderation if the group is public and/ or has numerous members.
