Apple’s iPhone Turns Ten Today: The Revolution Continues

Cupertino-based tech firm, Apple Inc. is surely known for it’s awesome gadgets/devices, ranging from it’s iPods, iPads, iPhones, MacBooks, iMacs, to name afew. However, one of the world’s loved devices turned 10 years today, “The iPhone” – from it’s first generation iPhone that was released on June 29th, 2007 to it’s most recent iPhone model; the iPhone 7, which was unveiled at an event on September 7th, 2016.

It was 10 years ago, that Apple Co-Founder Steve Jobs introduced the very first iPhone to the world. Steve showcased the smartphone at an event in San Francisco, US.

The euphoria that the launch of iPhone’s sees in the US and some other countries year-after-year continues to be unmatched, among it’s competitors, the likes of Samsung, Huawei, Sony, Google, and so forth.[related-posts]

The first iPhone – iPhone 2G; was launched on January 9th, 2007, however it went on sale on June 29th, 2007, and 700,000 iPhone 2G were sold on the first weekend. It spearheaded the smartphone revolution, and was the first phone with a touchscreen 3.5-inch display, featured; iOS 1.0, and 2MP rear camera. The camera had no auto focus, optical zoom, no flash, no video Recording. The phone never came with the app store, all apps were pre-installed.

In 2008 was the year of reckoning, as Apple managed to sell as many as 1 million units in the first weekend of the iPhone 3G launch. With the iPhone 3G, the company introduced 3G mobile network and GPS capabilities. It was also the first time Apple introduced the App Store and allowed third-party apps integration. The phone was upgraded to iOS 2.0

In 2009 came iPhone 3GS, featured with iOS 3.0, 3.2MP rear camera, and over 1 million units were sold in the first weekend. iPhone 4 introduced in 2010 was the first to have a retina display, and over 1.2 million units in the first weekend, and came with iOS 4.0. In 2011, was the iPhone 4S that was the first iPhone to feature; Apple Siri. The company sold 4 million units on the first weekend. 2012, saw iPhone 5 which was the first iPhone with a large screen, packed on iOS 6. Over 5 million iPhone 5 were sold on the first weekend.

The revolution continued till 2016, when the company introduced now, it’s latest iPhone, iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. The first iPhone with no HeadPhone jack.

While celebrating its success, Apple looks to create ripples this year as well with the iPhone 8. The smartphone has been heavily rumored, and is expected to come in an all-glass display, sport wireless charging, feature three variants, lose the Home Button, and introduce a new Haptic feedback system.

Facts about the iPhone revolution:

  1. The first iPhone launched in 2007, wasn’t launched with the App Store, till 2008 when the store came with the iPhone 3G.
  2. In 2016, TIME Magazine released its list of the 50 most influential gadgets of all time. At the top of the list is iPhone. According to TIME, iPhone is the most influential gadget as it “fundamentally changed our relationship to computing and information.”
  3. CEO Tim Cook in June 2016 at an employee meeting in Cupertino [Apple’s HQ] announced that company’s iPhone sales hit 1 billion a figure roughly equivalent to seventh of the world’s population. “iPhone has become one of the most important, world-changing and successful products in history, said Cook.”
  4. Retina screens are said to be the most expensive part of iPhones. iPhone 4 introduced in 2010 was the first iPhone to feature a retina screen.
  5. According to online reports, iPhone contributes to almost 60% of the company’s revenue since it went on sale in June 2007.
