Huawei Uganda has today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kampala International University (KIU), a school-enterprise cooperation project that helps higher education institutions to build a talent ecosystem —to establish an ICT Academy.

The Huawei ICT Academy is a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of Huawei that covers the entire Huawei ICT talent development process from course development, trainer enablement, lab environment setup, talent certification, competition, and employment.

At the signing of the MoU, Mr. Gao Jean, the Deputy Managing Director of Huawei Uganda said, “The ICT talent development program will train the staff and students of KIU.” Jean added that the staff and students will be certified after training.

The university will allow lecturers to operate ICT Academy classes after being certified in order to train the students. The courses at the academy will combine both theories and practicals since some students hardly have project experience. The Huawei certification will test the students’ learning journey as well as improve the development of ICT among KIU students.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor (DVC), Finance and Administration, Assoc. Prof. Janice Busingye on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Mouhamad Mpezamihigo applauded Huawei for their good bid. “KIU is happy to partner with Huawei. We have all the infrastructure in place for the ICT Academy. This is the beginning of many collaborations,” she said.

In her remarks, Mrs. Fouziya Mukyala Sooma, the Public Relations Manager of Huawei Uganda thanked Prof. Busingye for her cooperation, “We are looking forward to more cooperation with KIU,” Sooma said.

Meanwhile, in attendance at the signing of the MoU were; Dr. Margaret Kareyo, Dean School of Mathematics and Computing at KIU,

Mr. Wilbert Ayebazibwe; Directorate of Quality Assurance, and Mr. Obinna Osigwe; Directorate of Marketing and Public Relations at KIU.

Huawei ICT Academy of Uganda now comprises 13 universities in Uganda and has already certified hundreds of students in 2021. Huawei has not yet extended to private universities, thus still focusing on public universities.
