Chinese smartphone manufacturer; Huawei has today launched a budget friendly smartphone; the Huawei Y5 Lite in Kenya. The new handset is smaller or lite version of the Huawei Y5 Prime (2018) that was launched in May.
The handset has been priced at USD$97.52 (about UGX363, 800 or KSH9,990) and is readily available in black and Blue color options. The 5.45-Inch smartphone is the latest handset in the Huawei’s Y-series.
According to reports by TechMoran; Steven Li, Head of Eastern Africa Mobile, said the introduction of the Y5 Lite in the market is part of their strategy to target low end users who are looking for a budget device that offers unique experience that meets their needs and requirement.
Huawei last year announced it was existing entry-level smartphones to focus on high-end smartphones. The announcement was made Richard Yu; Huawei’s CEO of Consumer Business Group.
“We’re giving up the very low-end devices because the margin in this is extremely low, and it’s not making enough profit for us,” Richard is quoted saying in an interview with Bloomberg.
However, there was no mention of when this would go effective.
The company launching a handset like the Huawei Y5 Lite for entry-level smartphone holders draws competitions from likes of itel, and Tecno who have leveraged the smartphone market when it comes to entry-level smartphones.
“The market has been competitive with the introduction of devices by other players in the market. As Huawei, we’re keen on ensuring that our devices which we launch in the market are value for money making them more favorable in the already congested market. The launch of this device comes at a time when everyone is looking for a Christmas gift for their loved ones, it is an ideal gift for gifting people in your lives,” TechMoran quotes Steven.
