Tecno Camon CM Review: A Mid-Ranger With a 18:9 Screen Ratio

Tecno’s newest and first flagship smartphone this year; the Tecno Camon CM was unveiled in Uganda early this month but was officially launched on 9th January, 2018. Taking all the spotlight of being the first smartphone in the Tecno mobiles to feature an 18:9 screen ratio being a mid-range smartphones. The likes of the Phantom-series have a screen ration of 16:9.

However, Tecno managed to give the Camon CM tiny bezels – lowered all the four edges to create the 18:9 screen ratio without increasing the size of the phone. This is pretty smart. Like I said before, a mid-ranger spotting that wide screen ratio even before the high-end Tecno mobiles. Yes! that’s amazing.

1. Design
The Tecno Camon CM is the perfect phone to slip into your pocket or purse as it spots a slim and elegant body design with its total thickness measuring at about 7.75 mm. The design and the phone in general can be confused with the Tecno Camon CX Air. But they’re are two different phones.

On the left, has the simcards and microSD card tray. Thanks to Tecno, the phone has a provision for a microSD card. A lot of phones these days gives one the option of either using a second sim or a microSD card. While on the right are the volume and power button. Top has the 3.5 mm earphone jack while at the bottom we’ve the USB port, microphone piece, and a single grilled speaker. Finally the back comes with a 13MP rear camera, a 4-LED flash placed at the edge of the phone near the bezels, and a fingerprint sensor appears at the top-center. As the front has the 13MP front camera, and ear piece.

The design for the Camon CM is perfect with less buttons. The home, back, and recent options, slider appear inside the phone.

2. Display
The Tecno Camon CM has a 5.7-Inch FHD IPS touchscreen with a 2.5 D corning gorilla support glass. In addition a screen resolution of 720 x 1440MP (364 PPI) at a 18:9 screen ratio gives a wide range view when it comes to multimedia, nothing is cut out as seen with 16:9 screen ration phones.

Insight – U.S-based Entertainment firm; Netflix Inc. is known for using the 18:9 screen ratio for most of its content. So if you’re watching netflix on your Camon CM, just sit back and enjoy the whole picture.

3. Performance and Battery
The Camon CM comes with an Android 7.0 Nougat mobile OS with HiOS 2.0 from TECNO Mobile on top. To support the performance is the 2GB RAM sits on a Quad-core processor with Mediatek MT6737 chipset, and the processor clocks at 1.25 GHz. 2GB RAM isn’t bad for a mid-ranger phone, however, if a user is found of downloading heavy applications, it will slow the phone as well as freeze. However, the RAM is really for smaller applications. On the other hand, it also comes with 16GB of internal storage. The ROM as well isn’t bad, good enough to save you media, and if that’s not enough, its expandable upto 128GB with a microSD card.

The 3,000mAh Li-Ion non-removable battery is perfect for not heavy consumption. Battery is drained fast if over used. If not used heavily, the Camon CM can be used on a single charge. The Tecno Camon CX Air spots a 3,200mAh Li-Ion non-removable battery.

4. Cameras
The front and rear camera spot a 13MP camera setup with support LED flash in low light setting. For the back camera in particular, it has 4-LED lights, yes! 4, this gives more bright photos in low-light settings. I have to say, the cameras aren’t disappointing at all as being a member of the Camon-series. Both the 13MP cameras re-emphasizes the brand’s knack for designing high-end smartphones with sophisticated cameras.

Your photos are appear crisp, ‘with not much’ but detailed.

What was liked

  1. The 18:9 screen ratio is definitely it. Considering the fact it’s just a mid-range smartphone.
  2. We liked the fact that the phone supports a microSD card it being a dual-sim. Most dual-phones allows either to use a microSD card or a second sim.
  3. 4-LED flash light setting for the rear camera. This ensures and helps to give bright images.
  4. The phone is light, and portable. Can fit in one’s fist.
  5. Supports 4G network.

What wasn’t liked

  1. Battery was drained so fast for heavy users, prompting you to charge more than once in a day.
  2. 2GB of RAM. Nah! Can’t be in position to handle heavy applications that have sizes of over 1GB.

Pricing and Color Variants
The Tecno Camon CM is priced between 500,000 to 600,000 UGX depending from where you might buy it from. And is available in black and champagne gold color variants.[related-posts]
