Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced its participation in the 3rd annual UCC ACIA Awards to be held tomorrow under the theme ICT innovation for National Development. The awards seek to recognize and reward innovations in the country.

The Uganda’s rising awards category recognizes extraordinary application of ICTs by secondary school students towards the reduction of the digital divide in Uganda. This may be with regard to ICT access, affordability, availability and/or its applicability.

“Promotion of local talents is our responsibility as a leading global ICT solutions provider, and a core part of our strategy for Uganda and Africa generally. Last year, we signed MoU with Makerere University which consisted of specialized ICT training, knowledge transfer and internship programs for students. Currently we have 29 interns at our office, benefiting from the MoU, practising with the best engineers of the ICT area.” Said Radoslaw Kedzia, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Uganda.

Mr. Kedzia added that his company was keen to invest in future partnerships with the government and other private stakeholders to spot and equip the unique ICT talents amongst Uganda youth.

According to the eTransform Africa: The Transformational Use of Information and Communication Technologies in Africa Report 2012 by the World Bank and African Development Bank, ICT  innovations are delivering home-grown solutions in Africa, transforming businesses and driving entrepreneurship and economic growth. Initiatives such as the UCC ACIA awards are aimed at promoting socio-economic national growth.
