Tecno has unveiled a new flagship smartphone concept that aims to eliminate one of the last visible design elements on modern smartphones: the display bezel. The company says its new Next-Gen Bezelless Concept Phone is the first to achieve a true 0mm display border, removing the black frame that typically surrounds smartphone screens.
The concept, teased in a newly released video, is scheduled to make its public debut at the IFA 2026 ShowStoppers event in September. According to Tecno, the device overcomes a long-standing engineering challenge that has prevented manufacturers from completely removing the thin black border between the active display and the phone’s frame.
While flagship smartphones have steadily reduced bezel sizes over the past decade, a narrow border of around one to two millimetres has remained necessary to accommodate internal circuitry and structural requirements. Tecno says it has redesigned the phone’s internal architecture using advanced stacking methods, structural engineering, and new display packaging techniques to compress the visible border to zero.
The result is a screen that extends seamlessly to the edges of the device, creating the appearance of an uninterrupted display. Beyond its visual appeal, Tecno says the design offers practical benefits by providing a more immersive experience for video streaming, gaming, reading, and viewing photos without the distraction of visible borders.
The company positions the concept as more than a design exercise, describing it as a platform for future smartphone technologies. It says the engineering work behind the bezelless display also lays the foundation for advancements in areas such as camera integration, touch responsiveness, audio optimisation, and intelligent user interface interactions.
Although the device remains a concept, it signals Tecno’s ambitions to compete at the forefront of smartphone innovation by addressing a challenge that has persisted across the industry despite years of incremental display improvements.
Whether the technology is ready for commercial production remains to be seen. Still, its debut at IFA 2026 is expected to provide the first public look at what a truly borderless smartphone could look like and whether Tecno’s engineering breakthrough can influence the next generation of flagship devices.
