Uganda: New Vision to launch election website

THE Vision Group will tomorrow, Friday January 21, 2011, launch a new website which will act as a one stop centre for election news ahead of the 2011 presidential and parliamentary polls. The website will carry the latest updates from the campaign trails, profiles of candidates, tit-bits from manifestos, Electoral Commission bulletins, graphics and pictorial coverage of the candidates.

Dynamic site
“We want to make it easy for our online audiences in the country and abroad that are following the elections to track the candidates,” Vision Group’s Head of Digital, Louis Jadwong said.

Jadwong explained that the website will be dynamic with New Vision reporters across the country posting minute-by-minute updates on all election related news.

New leaders February 18

Ugandans will on February 18, go to polls to elect a new president and Parliament. Local government elections will be held thereafter.

The website will also be used to tally results as they are announced, giving graphical images and photographic portraits while the Vision Group electronic media would also stream the news.

“We shall break news and when results are announced we want to be the first to inform the nation and world who Uganda’s newly elected president is,” Jadwong observed.

Vision website 4th in Africa

The innovation comes at a time when the New Vision newspaper’s website www.newvision.co.ug has been ranked fourth out of 50 top most popular newspaper websites in Africa by 4 International Media & Newspapers.

New Vision is the flagship brand of the Vision Group which is Uganda’s largest media house with eight titles across the country

The Australia-based global ranking firm, 4 International Media & Newspapers, in its latest rankings, said New Vision is ranked fourth in Africa.

In first place is the Al-Ahram newspaper of Egypt, followed by The Times of South Africa, with Mail & Guardian Online, also a South African paper in third place.

New Vision is ranked 146th in the world. The New York Times is at number 1.

4 International Media & Newspapers is an international directory and search engine which focuses on worldwide newspapers with 7,000 newspapers ranked by web popularity in 200 countries.
