The National Information Technology Authority (NITA) Uganda with its partners Ernst & Young Global Limited, Huawei Technologies Uganda, and the World Bank Uganda today awarded winners of the second edition of the e-Government Excellence Awards, that recognize the various Government Agencies that have played a remarkable role in availing online government services to the public.

The award ceremony was held at the Kampala Serena Hotel attended by officials from the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, NITA Uganda, Huawei Technologies Uganda, World Bank Uganda, Ernst & Young Global Limited, members of the press, invited delegates and guests, among others. H.E President Yoweri K. Museveni was the Chief Guest who addressed the guests virtually.

The winners were awarded in the categories of; CIO of the Year, Agency of the Year, e-Service of the Year (per sector), Citizen’s Choice of the Year, BPO/ITES Company of the Year, ICT Journalist of the Year, and Best Exhibitor at the e-Government expo.

Sixteen of the submitted nominees were awarded accolades, and nine emerged as runners up and each was recognized at the gala and awarded certificates. Ony the categories of ICT Journalist, Citizens’ Choice, and Best Exhibitor at the e-Government expo had runners up —three to be exact from each category totaling the runners up to nine.

Introducing The Award Categories

Citizen Choice Award
The Citizen Choice was granted to the government website or e-service which will be voted by the public as the most useful/helpful in the citizenry’s lives.

Journalist of the year Award
NITA Uganda and its partners this year took a further step and acknowledged the role members of the press have played as advocates for change in this digital journey. Thus, introduced this category to award a technology journalist that has contributed significantly to quality, in-depth awareness on e-government in Uganda.

Chief Information Officer of the year Award
Chief Information Officer (CIO) award recognized a Government MDA officer that has performed exceptionally well in creating impact for the organization as well as championing the implementation of national IT-related standards

Agency of the Year Award
The award recognized a Government institution that exemplified outstanding excellence in the use of ICT tools to improve engagement with stakeholders. This extended to better engagement with citizens; open and transparent government operations; and/or the release of public sector information.

BPO/ITES company of the year
The award was granted to a BPO/ITES institution that exemplified outstanding excellence in the area of BPO/ITES in Uganda. This extended to the quality of services offered to its clients and existence within the organization a system that responds to clients’ queries and immediate resolution.

e-Service of the Year (per sector)
The award was granted to the Government e-Service which exemplified outstanding public service delivery, internal digital transformation, and improved efficiencies in Government.

Runners up in

ICT Journalist of the Year Award

The category was won by Nathan Ernest Olupot, a reporter with PC Tech Magazine.

Emerging as runners up were;

  • 1st runner up – Mark Wadulo (UBC TV).
  • 2nd runner up – Henry Okurut (UBC TV).
  • 3rd runner up – Lydia Nabakooza (NBS TV).

Citizens’ Choice

The award was won by Higher Education Students’ Financing Board (HESFB), implements a Student loan scheme established with a mandate to provide Loans and Scholarships to Ugandan students to pursue Higher Education.

Emerging as runners up were;

  • 1st runner up – URA E-tax services.
  • 2nd runner up – Anti Corruption Unit- Report corruption online.
  • 3rd runner up – Ministry of Finance- Integrated Financial Management Services- supplier registration.

Best Exhibitor at the e-Government expo

In this category, Uganda Driving Licensing System won.

Emerging as runners up were;

  • 1st runner up- National Medical Stores.
  • 2nd runner up- Uganda Cancer Institute.
  • 3rd runner up- National Building Review Board.
