A new innovation hub has on Friday been launched at the National University of Rwanda in Huye District, Southern Province.
Named UR Innovation Hub, the facility has been constructed at the University’s college of Arts in partnership with telecommunications company Airtel Rwanda.
It is well equipped with brand new Apple computers, laptops, video conference facilities, television screens, reliable internet connection as well as servers and storage devices for the students to store their projects.
Speaking to Rwandan local press during the launch, the University’ Deputy Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration, Pudence Rubingisa, said that the hub would bring students together to create something bigger.
He noted that the hub would empower students with information and telecommunication skills that will enable them to be more digitally enlightened and ultimately become more competitive in today’s fast changing economy.
“The Government of Rwanda wants the country to become an ICT hub in the near future, the innovation hub’s goals are to support development of ICT in Rwanda,” he reportedly said.
In a recent address, Rwanda’s Minister for youth and ICT underscored the country’s ambition to become a leading ICT exporter in the region by 2020.
He revealed that the ministry is set to spend USD 25million in introducing 5million citizens to digital literacy and opportunities through the use of e-governmnent and e-business services by 2020.
