The financial sector across Africa is undergoing a rapid transformation, with data-driven decision-making becoming a key engine for innovation, market advantage, and sustainable growth.

Financial institutions are increasingly using data analytics to detect fraud, predict market trends, and improve customer experiences in a shift toward a more digital economy.

At the forefront of this change is Ugandan data scientist Joan Kirunga, who has nearly a decade of experience building models to identify risks, prevent losses, and enhance operational efficiency. Her work bridges the gap between technology and finance, helping institutions transition from operations based on intuition to those based on insight.

Kirunga is one of a new generation of African innovators using data to help shape a more resilient and inclusive financial future.

Frequently discussing how data is reshaping the financial ecosystem, Kirunga highlights practical applications, such as using data to predict customer churn, assess credit risk, and detect fraudulent transactions in real time. According to her, “the value of data is not just in its collection but in the ability to translate it into decisions that safeguard institutions and enhance customer service.”

She sees No-Code Artificial Intelligence (AI) as the next major innovation in finance and argues that No-Code AI will democratize access to artificial intelligence, allowing professionals without programming skills to develop AI-powered tools. This change, she believes, will enable business leaders, risk analysts, and financial managers to participate directly in innovation.

She says the technology will accelerate digital transformation and promote a culture of data-driven decision-making across the financial sector.

Kirunga is pursuing a certification in No-Code AI and Machine Learning from MIT Professional Education.
