How to Make Your Twitter Account Private

Protect your tweets by making your Twitter private - here's how

When you create a Twitter account, it’s public by default, and anyone can follow you and everyone can see your tweets. However, in case you want to manually approve follow requests, such that only those who you approve to follow you get to see your account information and tweets, the way forward is to make your account private.

In this article, we share with you instructions on how to do so on both the iOS and Android apps as well as on the web browser.

Note: Protecting your tweets by making them private, won’t stop accounts that followed you before from seeing them unless you block them.

Twitter for Android

In case you’re using Twitter on your Android device, here’s how:

Step 1: Open Twitter on your Android device and tap your profile icon or Menu (three lines), depending on your Android version.
Step 2: Tap Settings and Privacy.
Step 3: Tap Privacy and Safety.
Step 4: Next to Protect Your Tweets, toggle the slider to on. (On some devices, you’ll have to check a box instead.)

Note: Once you lock your account, a padlock icon will appear next to your profile.

Twitter for iOS

In case you’re using Twitter on your iPhone or iPad, here’s how:

Step 1: Open Twitter on your iOS device and tap your profile icon.
Step 2: Select Settings and Privacy.
Step 3: Select Privacy and Safety.
Step 4: In the Protect Your Tweets section, toggle on the slider.

In a Web Browser

In case you’re using Twitter on your desktop computer via a web browser, here’s how:

Step 1: Navigate to Twitter, log in to your account, and Tap More (three dots) from the menu on the left.
Step 2: Select Settings and Privacy.
Privacy and Safety.
Step 4: Select Audience and Tagging.
Step 5: Select the box next to Protect Your Tweets to add a checkmark.
Step 6: Select Protect to confirm.

Congratulations! Your account information and tweets are now visible only to your approved followers.
