Telecommunication firm; MTN Uganda has today announced a new internet promo ‘MTN Dabolo’ that doubles the daily data bundles its subscribers purchased. For instance, if a subscriber bought data of 300Mbs, it is doubled to 600Mbs. Thus, getting 600Mbs at a price of UGX2000 that cost of 300Mbs

Martin Sebuliba; Senior Manager, Brand & Communications at MTN Uganda said the telco recognizes the increased importance of the internet in our daily lives — hence its commitment to ensure that Ugandans enjoy the benefits of reliable and affordable internet.

The campaign follows the MTN Home of Internet campaign that launched earlier this year — where they introduced their most affordable phone; ‘MTN Smart’ in the MTN Kamunye campaign. The smart feature phone is priced at UGX89,000 and allows its consumers to user apps such as; WhatsApp, Facebook, YouTube, Google Maps, among others.

The telco is trying so had to make its internet affordable to everyone. It’s least package cost UGX250 and gets you 15Mbs.

Internet penetration in Uganda is growth gradually. UCC released its fourth quarter of 2018 Communication’s Sector report that showed mobile internet subscription now stands at 14,360,847 up from 13,569,354 in the third quarter of 2018 — reflecting a growth of 5.8%.

The same report showed that the number of smartphones grew by 14% in the period of Q1 to Q4. Hence, playing a role in internet penetration since, most people buy smartphone to socialize, business, all that requires internet.

Today smartphones are so cheap and can cost about UGX100,000. Jumia in 2017 released a report that indicated that internet penetration in Uganda has increased over the years as a result of cheap data enabled smartphones.

Therefore with the high growth in number of smartphones, telcos and ISPs are also making an effort to make its internet or data bundles cheap for its subscribers.
