A new controversial law which gives police authority to arrest people for comments on social networks and other internet sites has been introduced by India’s Supreme Court.

The law has given police authority to arrest people for comments on social networks and other internet sites.

The court ruled that the controversial Section 66A of the Information Technology Act was “unconstitutional” and must go.

Critics have already come out against the law saying it is against free speech.

In 2012, an Indian medical student was arrested in 2012 over a Facebook post questioning why her city of Mumbai should come to a standstill to mark the death of a prominent politician.

Her friend was arrested for liking the post and both were charged with engaging in speech that was offensive and hateful.
