Uganda Hosts Regional Meeting on Cybercrime Prevention

Uganda government, through NITA-U together with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and the Commonwealth Cybercrime Initiative (CCI) is holding the EAC Regional Meeting on‘Preventing and Combating Cybercrime’ on 27th and 28th May 2014.

The aim of this meeting is to develop initiatives that will be used effectively across the East African Community and further build the countries’ capacity to prevent and combat cybercrime and thereby strengthen the ICT legal and regulatory environment through the exchange of knowledge and expertise. The meeting has brought together senior government officials, key stakeholders from Member States of the EAC, as well as the representatives of the relevant organisations and will officially be opened by Minister of ICT, Hon. John Nasasira.

Child Online Protection is a challenge faced in the country today due to the increased access and usage of internet. In this regard the National Information Security Strategy aims to protect children from the possible dangers and risks of the internet.

The meeting is also discussing measures that will assist Uganda in building capacity to prevent and combat cybercrime and thereby strengthen the ICT legal and regulatory environment. These include developing awareness of legislation, development and implementation of a framework and/or mechanisms for strengthened regional and international cooperation, building university partnerships, preventing misuse of mobile money systems, and implementing appropriate network architecture and cyber security standards among others.

National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U) has taken lead in the development of the National Information Security Strategy which aims at addressing challenges that are envisaged in this era of technological advancement.
