Something structural has changed in how gaming products get built, and most people outside the industry haven’t noticed it yet. The change isn’t a new headset or a flashier graphics engine. It’s quieter and more consequential than that: the technology underneath a growing share of online gaming products is no longer built by the companies whose names are on the front. It’s licensed. And that single shift is redrawing the competitive map of one of the largest entertainment sectors on earth.
The scale makes it worth paying attention to. Worldwide gaming revenue reached roughly $187.7 billion in 2024, according to Newzoo, and the industry now counts more than three billion players, with mobile alone generating close to half of all revenue. An industry that size doesn’t restructure often. When it does, the reasons are worth understanding, because they tend to show up in other industries a few years later.
The old way of building
For most of the industry’s history, launching a serious online gaming product meant building the machine yourself. That machine is not trivial. It has to deliver data to enormous numbers of users at the same instant, keep everything live and consistent, stay online without interruption, scale through sudden surges, handle many currencies and languages, and defend itself against constant attack. Building all of that from scratch is slow, expensive, and easy to get wrong.
The numbers behind that are sobering. Clutch’s 2026 pricing data puts the average custom software project at around $132,000 and thirteen months of development, and platforms that require real-time processing and serious security routinely pass $300,000 and stretch to eighteen months before launch. For a gaming product, those figures sit at the higher end, and they buy you only the foundation — before you have designed a single thing a player actually sees.
So for a long time, the ability to compete was gated by the ability to build. The companies with the deepest pockets and largest engineering teams set up first, and everyone else watched from outside. Infrastructure was the barrier, and the barrier favoured incumbents.
What the shift actually is
White-label technology removed that gate. Instead of building the engine, a company licenses one that already works, brands it as its own, and puts it in front of players. The hard technical layer — the real-time delivery, the scaling, the uptime, the security, the currency and language handling — arrives ready. The operator supplies the brand, the market knowledge, and the relationships.
This is not new as a business model. Store-brand goods, contract manufacturing, and cloud infrastructure all run on the same logic: let the people who are good at building the hard thing build it once, and let everyone else compete on what they do best. What’s new is how completely the gaming industry has adopted it, and how much it changes about who gets to play.
The broader software market shows the direction of travel. Global software spending is on track to exceed $1.4 trillion in 2026, per Gartner, and the cloud-software category that these platforms belong to reached about $408 billion in 2025 and is projected to approach $465 billion this year, according to Precedence Research. Buying capability rather than building it has become the default across business software. Gaming is simply one of the more visible places it’s happening.
What it reshapes
The interesting part is not the technology. It’s what the technology does to competition.
First, it widens the field. When the expensive part becomes something anyone can license, the barrier that used to protect large incumbents falls away. Regional operators, smaller brands, and newcomers who could never have funded a platform of their own can now launch one that stands on the same technical footing as the giants. The map of who can compete stops being a short list.
Second, it moves the contest up the stack. Once every serious operator has access to comparable infrastructure, infrastructure stops being a differentiator. The competition shifts to the things a platform can’t hand you: brand, content, player experience, and a real understanding of a specific market. A company’s edge is no longer whether it can build the engine, but what it does with one.
Third, it collapses time and distance. A product that once took years to build can now launch in weeks, and it can launch across many markets at once. That matters enormously in a mobile-first world. Smartphones account for around 80% of global mobile connections, according to the GSMA, and in fast-growing regions those devices are how people access almost everything. A platform built to handle many currencies, languages, and network conditions from day one lets an operator reach those players without re-engineering anything.
The engine that has to hold
None of this works unless the licensed layer genuinely carries the weight, and this is where the model earns its reputation or loses it.
The parts of a gaming platform that don’t differentiate one operator from another — the real-time delivery, the scaling under load, the uptime, the reconnection logic for players on unstable connections — are exactly the parts that should be solved once and inherited by everyone building on top. This matters because it puts advanced capability within reach of companies that could never have built it alone. Gartner expects more than 80% of companies to have deployed AI-enabled applications by the end of 2026, up from a tiny fraction three years earlier. In gaming, much of that capability will arrive not because each operator built it, but because it came baked into the platform they licensed. The shift that democratised infrastructure is now doing the same for intelligence.

Now an operator who understands their market can be live in a fraction of that time, on technology that matches anyone’s. What decides the winner isn’t the size of the engineering budget anymore — it’s how well you know your players. We see local operators using that to take on brands many times their size, and increasingly, to win.”
Lozano’s point is the heart of the shift. White-label technology didn’t just make building cheaper. It changed the question the industry competes on.
Not a shortcut to quality
It would be a mistake to read all this as a free pass. When a company builds on a licensed platform, that platform becomes its foundation, and a weak foundation simply relocates the risk. If the underlying technology falters, the operator’s product falters with it. The choice of which platform to build on becomes one of the most consequential decisions a gaming company makes — a strategic dependency, not a procurement line item.
The questions that matter are unglamorous. Does the platform stay reliable at its busiest, not its average? Does it hold up on poor connections, which describe a large share of real players? Are tenants genuinely isolated? Is there a serious team behind it when something breaks? Operators who treat the decision casually can end up with the same fragility they hoped to escape. The ones who get the most from the model treat it as seriously as a key hire.
Where this goes
Industries tend to follow the same arc once a hard capability becomes something you can rent. Cloud computing turned server rooms into a utility, and competition moved to what companies built on top. E-commerce platforms did the same for online retail. Gaming is now travelling that road, and the destination is familiar: infrastructure becomes a shared foundation, and the contest moves to brand, experience, and market understanding.
The companies that thrive in that world won’t be the ones who own the most servers. They’ll be the ones who understand their players best and can move fastest to serve them. For an industry worth well over $180 billion and still growing, that’s a meaningful change in who holds the advantage — and it’s only beginning to play out.
