The Bank of Uganda (BoU) has appointed Collin Babirukamu as its Chief Information Officer (CIO). Set to begin his role in March, Babirukamu transitions to the central bank after serving his notice of resignation as Director of e-government Services at the National Information Technology Authority – Uganda (NITA-U). His appointment signals the bank’s commitment to modernizing its digital infrastructure, enhancing the National Payments System, and aligning with global fintech trends.

According to the Daily Monitor, Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego, Bank of Uganda Deputy Governor, announced the appointment in an internal memo dated January 28.

Babirukamu’s appointment comes at a crucial time for the bank as it navigates the evolving digital landscape and seeks to enhance the efficiency and security of the country’s financial system. Uganda’s financial ecosystem is grappling with cyber threats, the rise of digital currencies, and pressure to adopt inclusive technologies. His experience at NITA-U and Oracle Corporation positions him to address these challenges head-on.

The BoU plays a pivotal role in safeguarding the country’s monetary stability and regulating financial institutions. However, rapid technological advancements—from mobile banking to blockchain and artificial intelligence—have transformed the sector, demanding agile leadership to navigate risks and opportunities.
