Vodacom Tanzania to focus on M-Pesa for business expansion

M-pesa-vodacomVodacom Tanzania, which is a subsidiary of South Africa’s Vodacom plans to concentrate on mobile data and M-Pesa, its mobile money service, to increase revenue in the east African country.

This is as a result of reduced earnings from SMS and voice.

The operator’s strategy is to focus largely on M-Pesa, mobile data, network investment, distribution and brand, as stated by the telco’s MD, Rene Meza, in the country’s capital of Dar es Salaam on Wednesday.

M-Pesa, launched in Tanzania in 2008, crossed the five million user mark by mid-201, and has attracted around six million customers to date, based on the Vodacom executive’s announcement that 55% of Vodacom Tanzania’s subscribers are now using the mobile money service, while it intends to expand its coverage to even the most remote parts of the country.

Meza claims that between 100,000 and 150,000 net subscribers are joining M-Pesa per month.
