Nelson Mandela’s top 10 apps

mandela-mural-2-350x262As the world mourns the passing of former South African President Nelson Mandela, with a memorial service of global significance scheduled for 10 December 2013 at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium, there are a number of mobile applications that share the legacy and history of the iconic statesman. IT News Africa compiled a list of apps that capture the great man’s life and history.

1. Honor Nelson Mandela

Users who download this app will be able to light a candle to remember and respect Nelson Mandela, the anti-apartheid icon, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize and the father of South-Africa. “See a different Nelson Mandela quote every time you light a candle, read memories about Mandela and send a greeting yourself. Includes the life story of Mandela,” the description of the app reads. There are two versions available, a free one and a paid version, which will cost $1. Developed by Teemu Kuusimurto, it is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch.

2. Nelson Mandela Quotes

Developed by The Greatest Of All Time, this app is the essential guide of Nelson Mandela quotes. This new HD version features images and a new designed user interface with break up images. All pictures with quotes can be saved as wallpapers with high quality and high definition, and all pictures are saved offline, so there is no need to be connected to the internet in order for the quotes to refresh.

3. Nelson Mandela (history)

For users who would like to read up more about the iconic statesman, this app is a one-stop shop for all information relating to his life. Developed by n-frames Technologies Ltd. for Android devices, the offering features a biography, pictures, videos and quotes. “Not only can you get them in one place, you can share all your favourites with your friends in a click,” the developer explains. Including Mandela, the developer has also released apps for other prominent people such as Charlie Chaplin, Warren Buffet and Walt Disney.

4. Nelson Mandela (general information)

Another app with great information regarding Mandela, this educational app developed by Triple Bottom Line, LLC. “Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president in 1994, following a 20-year anti-apartheid campaign,” the app states in their description. A highly-detailed biography providing users with relevant and up-to-date information is included.

5. Nelson Mandela Quiz

For those users who would like to test their knowledge of Mandela, this app – developed by 101Apps – is a free, multiple choice style quiz. “The questions cover the life and times of the well-known and liked South African Statesman, Nelson Mandela. The app ships with 50 questions and you can download an additional 50 questions from the developer’s website for free,” the developer states. Users will be able to select how many questions they would like to answer per session, and the questions are randomly selected and displayed along with five possible answers. The answers are displayed in random order.

6. Mandela’s Family

Developed for Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system, the app features a detailed view of Mandela’s family – specifically his wives, children and grandchildren. It is a great historical source for historians or anybody who is interested in his clan, his family and his ancestral history – dating back many years.

7. History Timeline: Mandela

Sticking to a historical theme, the History Timeline: Mandela app is a great resource for history buffs. Also developed for Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system, by Mpondo Ndamase, the app features a timeline of events that marked the life of this legendary South African political icon.  The developer has also created an app that chronicles the history of South Africa called the History Timeline: South Africa app.

8. Life of Nelson Mandela

“He was the first black South African to hold the office, and the first elected in a fully representative, multiracial election. His government focused on dismantling the legacy of apartheid through tackling institutionalised racism, poverty and inequality, and fostering racial reconciliation,” the app states in their description. Just as the title states, the app briefly describes his personal life, achievements and includes a photo gallery. Developed by Naresh Kumar M, the educational app is made available for Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system.

9. Mandela Project

“Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary life and legacy demonstrate that we each have the capacity to make a positive difference in the world,” states founders Ndaba and Kweku Mandela. The project, with its accompanying website and app, lets users join the developers to help build a movement honouring Mandela’s legacy. “Share your inspiration with the Mandela family and community on Mandela Project. Be the change you wish to see in the world,” the app reads.

10. Nelson Mandela Smart TV app

The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, in partnership with Samsung, wanted to produce an Android Application that would be engaging and provide information on the life of Nelson Mandela. Developed by Cytrus, the application displays content from the current Nelson Mandela Foundation website, key focus points for the app are an interactive Timeline, On this Day, News and Social Sharing. The Timeline displays historical events in Nelson Mandela’s life using social sharing, images, video and facts.
