Google is organising a two day summit at the Protea Hotel in Kampala. The summit provides a platform for institutions to acquire information on what the program is about and how it can benefit them.

It aims at highlighting the benefits of the program and showcasing the work that Google is doing on the ground with existing universities with a key focus on infrastructure support and integration of program processes.

Universities in Uganda can benefit from a program which offers a free set of customizable tools that enable their faculties, staff and students to work together and learn more effectively through the provision of Google Apps for education. Google is working to facilitate a vibrant and sustainable internet ecosystem, a part of which is the Google Apps Supporting Programs (GASP).

GASP seeks to reduce internet access barriers, improve communication and collaboration for thousands of University and institutions staff and students, thus enhancing teaching, learning and research through the use of Google’s tools and technologies (e.g. Gmail, calendar, docs)  and Google is working with universities and other institutions across emerging markets to achieve these goals.

Speaking at the summit, the GASP lead for Sub- Saharan Africa, John Wesonga, highlighted the benefits of the program, stating that, “The program is an initiative designed to catalyse internet usage and Google Apps adoption in Sub – Saharan Africa universities through the provision of Google Apps for education and that Google will support the institutions through deployment of the program, strengthening existing ICT services, technical consulting and training.”

The conference is targeting university VC’s (senior management) and University ICT managers in Uganda and brings together over 20 public and private universities and institutions in the region.
