Kenyan smart card keeps track of school kids

The system comes in the form of a smart card module called ‘Tattle’ that sends parents an SMS alert each time their child gets on and off the school bus. Students swap the card when boarding and disembarking from the bus, and the information is to simultaneously messaged to the parents’ phones and school computer systems. A log of students movement is also created.

The technology has been introduced by a company called Siltech, which aims to reduce parents’ worries about whether or not their children would be late for school, or if they have arrived safely.

The system also reduces truancy in children, since parents are informed on whether their children boarded the bus or missed it.

“It delivers peace of mind to parents and guardians,” said Siltech project manager Naomi Kariuki, adding that many schools are embracing the system that was launched last year.

A few private schools in Nairobi are using the technology.
