Uganda Reaches Android Developer Challenge finals

South Africa has recorded the highest number of finalists in Google’s Android Developer Challenge, which was launched in April 2011. The Android Developer Challenge invited talented and creative developers from sub-Saharan Africa to design and build original Android applications for mobile phones.

Seven finalists have been shortlisted from South Africa, followed closely by Kenya in the competition that attracted 19 African countries.

Among other African countries that reached the finals are Nigeria, Uganda, Senegal, Malawi, Togo, Ghana, Tanzania and Republic of Guinea.

Categories for entries included entertainment, media and games; social networking and communications; and productivity, tools and lifestyle. Winners will each receive an Android phone and $25,000.

“These finalists will be awarded a new Android mobile device, and will have the opportunity to make their applications even better with help from Googlers from around the world, who will provide mentoring and advice to teams”.
