Centenary Bank has issued a clarification in response to recent media reports alleging that two staff members from its Mapeera Branch were involved in the theft of UGX10.3 million from a customer.

In a statement released on Friday, the bank emphasized that the issue stemmed from a dispute over the amount the customer presented during a deposit transaction, rather than fraud by its employees. According to the bank, the customer later returned with the missing Shs10 million, but also proceeded to file a police complaint.

The matter was later settled after legal complications made the charges premature and unsustainable. Centenary Bank stressed that the staff were discharged not because of a plea bargain—as would have been the case if theft had been admitted—but due to lack of evidence supporting fraud claims.

“The reference to ‘stolen money’ by the press was unfortunate,” the statement read, underlining the bank’s concern that the reporting misrepresented the situation.

Reaffirming its stance, the management noted, “Centenary Bank has zero tolerance to fraud,” assuring customers of the integrity of its operations and its commitment to transparent banking practices.

The bank encouraged clients to contact its customer care channels for further clarification and reiterated its dedication to safeguarding customer deposits.
