Oppo has announced a gen AI photo-editing tool, AI Eraser to its Reno phone series, following the lead of Samsung and Google.
The AI Eraser tool lets you remove unwanted objects/subjects from a photo by drawing a circle around them (the unwanted objects/subjects) and the AI generates realistic-looking content to fill up the space. According to Oppo, the AI Eraser tool can accurately identify objects/subjects from over 120 categories, including people, pets, buildings, and flowers, to mention a few.
Some of this functionality can already be achieved with third-party apps, such as Photoshop, but AI Eraser allows you to perform photo-editing tasks natively on Oppo phones.
Google kicked off a gen AI arms race late last year, debuting a bevy of AI-powered features on its Pixel 8 series, including photo-editing tools such as Best Take Swap and Magic Eraser. Samsung followed with Generative Edit, among other Galaxy AI features, on its flagship Galaxy S24 line-up.
Oppo reportedly will debut more AI-based features on its phones in the coming months.
Smartphone companies are betting on gen AI, hoping it’ll be the next big thing to encourage people to upgrade their phones.
