Hands on the Tecno Camon 20 Premier, Unboxing & First Thoughts

The Camon 20 Premier was exquisitely made.

About a month ago Tecno Mobile unveiled the Camon 20 series as the second set of smartphones this year in Uganda. Officially launched in the country by the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Hon. Chris Baryomunsi, the Camon 20 series come in four variants however, only three; the Camon 20, Camon 20 Pro, and the Camon 20 Premier were made available for the Ugandan market.

As for the pricing, the Camon 20 costs UGX810,000, Camon 20 Pro costs UGX962,000, and the Camon 20 Premier costs UGX1,800,000. With Tecno’s partnership with TakeNow, customers that can’t fully pay for the phones can pay in installments — terms and conditions do apply. In addition, any Camon 20 you buy, comes with 3GB free monthly data (for 3 months) — including a 100% bonus for every bundle you load courtesy of MTN Uganda.

The phones are available at all Tecno shops, MTN service centers, and authorized dealers across the country. Luckily enough, Tecno sent us the Camon 20 Premier so we could have a hands-on experience. I would say it is a better option out of the 3 phones if you have UGX1.8M freely to spend. Otherwise, we would recommend getting the Pro version.

Unboxing — the Camon 20 Premier comes in a well-stocked package (blue and white boxed) as we have seen from its past devices. Inside the box you have the phone itself sitting on top, underneath is a rubber phone case, a 45W charger, headphones, and a USB-C cable. The Camon 20 (5G) Premier comes in two color options; Dark Welkin, and Serenity Blue — we got the Dark Welkin variant.

Taking the wrap off the phone, just as we saw at the launch, one of the things that make the Tecno Camon 20 Premier special is the back finish. Tecno calls it a Puzzle Deconstructionist Design and it features ‘Magic Skin leather’, which is soft yet resistant to fingerprints and abrasion. This gives it a premium make and is nice to the touch and we’d understand if you don’t use the phone case that comes with it. The Puzzle Deconstructionist Design I believe for now is Tecno’s best finish on any of their devices — ‘yet’.

The frame of the Tecno contrasts nicely with the rear panel. It’s a glossy, mirrored finish and it’s fully flat, which allows the phone to stand on its own and feel sturdy in the palm. Although it is a bit thicker, I would prefer a thinner version, the phone still stands out.

Tecno has done a couple of changes that we might see more of in their upcoming devices, (1) one port — a USB Type-C port for both charging and your earphones, (2) the sim card tray has been shifted to the bottom from the sides that we were used to, (3) the under-display fingerprint, and finally it comes with an intriguing imaging system proving the company’s ability to innovate in the camera section. Overall, the Tecno Camon 20 Premier is exquisitely made.

To quickly run down on the specs, the Tecno Camon 20 Premier has a 6.67-inch AMOLED panel with a 120Hz refresh rate, a resolution of 1080 x 2460 pexels, and a 403 ppi density. Comes with a 6nm Dimensity 8050 chipset, Octa-core processor, 8GB of RAM, 512GB of onboard storage, a 5,000mAh battery, Android 13 OS under HIOS 13, a 32MP front-facing camera, a trio-rear camera (50MP + 108MP + 2MP), and support fast charging. The front and rear cameras can shoot videos in 1080p at 30fps — and the rear can go up to 4K at 30fps.
