Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIGP), Asan Kasingye has been designated as UOT (Ugandans On Twitter) President after he won with a percentage of 61% votes in a poll election that was held on Twitter.
Simultaneously, Ms. Sandra Mwesiga will be assisting him on his duties as she was selected Vice President in a poll she won with 47% of the votes cast in.
Mr. Asan Kasingye expressed his gratitude in a tweet he posted thanking those that voted him for the position.
In his tweet he wrote, “Thank you so much friends. Humbled. I pray for God’s wisdom & guidance so that the dreams of #UOT can be realized. We have different backgrounds, dreams, perceptions, beliefs etc. But, we are all human beings & Ugandans.”
Kasingye replaces succeeds Fred Mwebya who has been in position since 2017, which Sandra succeeds Mathias Ssemanda as vice president.
Asan Kasingye is an active user on the micro-blogging website with 53,000+ followers — who he engages with in all perspective(s) including matters of national security. Tweeps are found of reporting cases to him through Twitter that the police might not be aware responding swiftly that the case(s) would be handled and later gives a follow-up when done. As a result of this tweeps count on him, when it comes to concern of their safety.
Kasingye is among the few members of state that frequently engage(s) with the UOT community. Hence, explains why he was nominated as UOT President with him ending up winning the position.
According to statistics by Stat Counter, as of June 2019 13.26% of social media users in Uganda are Twitter users. Making it the third most used social media platform in Uganda after Facebook, and Pinterest in the 1st and 2nd positions respectively.
UOT birthed in 2017 to encourage Ugandans to join Twitter so to engage in local conversations that address their local social economic issues.
The main roles of the President and the VP — is to bring UOT together to build and support others in our communities. In addition, encourage them on how best social media can be used to positively impact lives than dividing and creating trolling content that does not bring growth to the platform users.
According to Fred, Ugandans spent a lot of time hyping foreign content trends on their timelines than discussing issues regarding our own people and country. Hence, developing the body to tackle the issue.
Fred in a statement says during his term he can now confirms that, UOT are now focused on local content than before. He says hundreds of youths and startups are now surviving on the platform as their source of livelihood and survival. Tweeps are able to promote their business/startups, influence for local brands, in return making a few buck from it.
Through the new leadership, UOT wants the government to embrace Twitter to deliver timely and classified information to Ugandans.
