AirQo Wins $1.25M Grant From Google’s AI Impact Challenge

Makerere University’s AirQo Project is among the 20 grantees that will share USD$25 million from Google’s AI Impact Challenge. The challenge supports organizations that are using the Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address social and environmental challenges.

Google announced the winners at the on-going Google I/O 2019 event in San Francisco.

AirQo emerged grantee from a pool of applications Google received from 119 countries—spanning 6 continents with projects ranging from environmental to humanitarian. The project also happens to be the only grantee from Africa.

AirQo an air quality monitoring project applies AI to data from low-cost air sensors installed on moto-taxis to track and forecast air pollution.

The project will receive USD$1.25 million that will see the team use to run and improve their project. [related-posts]

AirQo will on top of the grant receive coaching from Google’s AI experts as well as an opportunity to join a customized 6-month Google Developers Launchpad Accelerator program.
