This is our weekly news round up of all we’ve heard from MTN Uganda and Huawei helping the visually impaired children to Apple’s new mobile OS; the “iOS 10” to new updates on social media including; Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat to WWDC and E3 events to microsoft acquring linkedIn for 26.2billion USD and so forth.

SnapChat to start an online tech magazine
SnapChat is set to start an online magazine called Real Life, which will publish roughly one article each weekday on the subject of technology. Not a lot of details have been revealed yet, except that the first edition of the magazine will go out on June 27 this year. Full story

MTN Uganda and Huawei help the visually impaired children
Telecom giants, MTN Uganda launched its 10th edition of changing lives through its staff volunteerism project of 21 Days of Y’ello Care under the theme Investing in Education for All”. The MTN staff commissioned a fully connected ICT Hub at Mbarara School of the visually impaired children, while Huawei Uganda also handed over 24 smartphones to pupils of the Uganda School for the Deaf – Ntinda, to help them through their education and daily activities.

Facebook new updates for it’s users and it’s safety check feature in Orlando
Facebook-owned messaging service, Messenger made it easier for you to see your conversations and ways to connect to your friends and family right where you need them most and you can now use messenger for Android as the default SMS App. The social giants also updated its Facebook resources they offer to people around the world who may be experiencing self-injury or suicidal thoughts, as well as the support they offer to their concerned friends and family members.

Following the attacks in Orlando where a gunman armed with an assault rifle killed 50 people at a packed gay nightclub which was recorded as the worst mass shooting in US history, Facebook activated its safety feature in the US for the first time.

Father’s day is celebrated worldwide to recognize the contribution that fathers and father figures make to the lives of their children. Twitter brings periscope to it’s twitter apps and also updates its block button
Following a limited test in May and June, Twitter placed a Periscope button in its app for both iOS and Android phones. The Periscope “Live” button shows up on the screen for posting a new tweet, alongside buttons for posting a photo or posting a video.

Twitter also updated its block button so people who use the function can’t see each other’s tweets any more.

Uber launches in Dar-es-Salaam and partner with Factual to access its Global Places
Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania, joins the list of smart transportation hubs in Africa as the 475th city in Uber’s growing global network, following their previous success in other African cities. The San Francisco based transport startup also partnered with Factual to enable Uber access Factual’s Global Places data for Uber’s product and service offerings. Factual’s Global Places data covers 95 million local businesses and points of interest in 50 countries.

Orange launched Orange money in France
Orange launched their Mobile money transfer service in France to allow transfer to African Countries. By launching the service in France, Orange responded to a strong demand from its customers with family or friends in Africa. The service is offered to Orange mobile subscribers in France and enables them to transfer money via their mobile to other Orange Money customers in Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Senegal, and within Metropolitan France.

Microsoft Corp. unveiled project scorpio and Xbox One S
Microsoft unveiled a new XBox console, ‘Project Scorpio’ and a slimmer version of its Xbox One, ‘XBox One S’ at the E3. Project Scorpio which will support ultra-high resolution gaming and virtual reality while the new XBox One S console, will bring new features such as streaming support for 4K videos, which provides four-times the resolution of high-definition content.

Mobile Money without borders; Remittance growing big in the ecosystem
The mobile money industry continues to grow globally, with more than 270 live mobile money services in 93 countries. In Uganda, the amount of money transacted through mobile money by December 2015 was UGX 32.5 trillion according to the Bank of Uganda. Full story

The new Apple mobile operating system, iOS 10
Apple Inc. early this week previewed iOS 10 at the WWDC, as the biggest release ever of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system (OS), that features huge updates from expressing yourself in bold new ways in messages to reliving memories like never before in photos to beautifully redesigned maps to using the power of Siri in more apps than ever..and so forth.

Mobile data charging and how it happens on the network
3G/4G cellular networks adopt usage-based charging. Mobile users are billed based on the traffic volume when accessing data services. Internet data service is increasingly popular today. Most networks have deployed 3G/4G cellular networks. Statistics indicate that 1.2 billion or so are active internet users worldwide. Full Story

Microsoft acquiring linkedIn for $26.2 billion
Software developers, Microsoft Corp. will acquire business-oriented social networking service, LinkedIn Corp., for $196 per share in an all-cash transaction valued at $26.2 billion.
