Seene, Snapchat’s Startup That Lets Mobile Users Make 3D Selfies

According to a new report from TechCrunch, Snapchat quietly purchased a 3D selfie startup called Seene.

This acquisition happened a few months ago, according to the report. However, there wasn’t any price disclosed, although TechCrunch characterized it as a low cash-and-share deal

The technology behind Seene utilizes your smartphone camera to create a 3D image of whatever you point it at. The result is a still 3D photograph image that moves when you tilt your phone or swipe with your finger something many Snapchat users would love.

The Seene’s engineering team led by CTO and Co-founder Sam Hare, which is split between the U.S. and London, will relocate to Los Angeles, where Snapchat is headquartered, TechCrunch reports.

Business Insider also reported that, the company does have a research lab and it’s rumored that it could be working on some virtual reality play or a Google Glass competitor as well.
