facebook-logoFacebook has revealed that  it is hosting its first ever ‘creative hackathon’ in Africa on 18 September.

The event which is dubbed the ‘Creative Hackathon’, is planned to take place in Cape Town in partnership with the Loeries Creative Week 2014.

In a statement, Facebook says the hackathon will “give young creatives the opportunity to work in teams on a real creative brief for the Loeries Creative Future Scholarship.”

Young creative designers with one to two years experience can take part for free, but spaces are limited to 40 participants. The location will be the Cullinan Hotel in Cape Town where the hackathon is expected to kick off at 10am on 18 September.

“The Loeries Creative Week is an annual creative hub that attracts over 4000 people from the brand communications industry, making it a perfect platform for us to meet the South African creative industry to share ideas,” says Rob Newlan, head of Facebook Creative Shop,Europe, Middle East and Africa.

He said that Facebook believes that creativity is king again and during the Hackathon and the Seminar they will be talking about how to unlock the potential of technology with creativity.

The event will also be focusing on how Facebook is bringing storytelling back and ensuring those stories reach the right people at incredible scale.

Newlan will also be a judge at the 2014 Loeries as well as a keynote speaker at the Loeries DStv Seminar of Creativity, according to a statement.
Earlier this month Facebook announced that it had notched up 100 million users in Africa.
