Somalia: UN office goes digital

In a statement, the office said the move was in an effort to “increase the scope of our outreach during the critical time leading to the end of the transitional period and beyond.”

They can now be reached on the social networking site – Twitter on the handle @UNPOSomalia.

UNPOS can also be reached on Tumblr – a microblogging website on the link unposomalia.tumblr.com as well as the picture sharing platform Flickr on: flickr.com/photos/unpos/

From these connections, the office will give information about its work and provide an alert system to inform relevant audiences of press statements, media alerts, meeting locations and timings.

“Our Leadership Blog posts will facilitate more direct interaction with major audiences and provide an effective channel to highlight challenges and promote the progress being made as we approach the end of the transitional period and beyond,” the statement read.

Currently, UNPOS has posted Special Representative of the Secretary-General Augustine Mahiga’s letter to the Somali People on the its blogging site.

On Flickr, the office will give users a chance to view engaging images of the UN in action.

“We will also be posting a range of photos, including images from throughout Somalia, to show the world how things are changing on the ground,” the brief read.
