Uganda ICT Association set for 1st AGM

Almost 9 months after its launch, the ICT Association of Uganda announced this month that it’ll be holding its first Annual General Meeting this Friday at the Association offices in Kampala.

The Association targets to contribute to Uganda’s technological development by bringing organisations and key ICT Stakeholders under one body capable of supporting ICT research and advocacy for projects and policies concerning adoption and usage of ICTs by the undeserved and unreached in Uganda.

As the ICTAU prepares to elect its first substantive Board of Directors, Interim Chairman Simon Kaheru says transparency and accountability are and shall continue to be the Association’s hallmarks.

“This is our first AGM as an Association and will be crucial in enabling all members to observe the rules of proper governance, as well as provide transparency and accountability of the first few months that we have been in existence,” said Simon Kaheru while speaking to PC Tech Magazine about this week’s AGM.

“The Association is young and still in its formative stages so it is important that we do things correctly right from the beginning. We intend to be active as an Association and as individual members for a very long time to come, and we will stand out in Uganda as we do so,” he added.

While it is an Industry-Association, the ICTAU, through its formative stages has benefited from support from the regulator, National Information Technology Authority (NITA-U).

In a statement at the launch last year, NITA-U’s Executive Director James Saaka had spoken with optimism and pledged the Authority’s full support and commitment.

“This will see prosperity and competitiveness of the IT Industry players and increase growth and development of the ICT sector,” he said.

“NITA-U promotes and is the focal point of co-operation for Information Technology users and providers at regional and international levels. It promotes cooperation, coordination and rationalization among users and providers of Information Technology at national and local level so as to avoid duplication of efforts and ensure optimal utilization of scarce resources,” read a statement published on NITA-U’s website last year.
