Google is Reportedly Adding an AI Voice Feature for Gmail

Gmail’s AI-assisted email drafting feature might soon support voice-activated prompts.

Story Highlights
  • Google's "Help Me Write" was launched in June last year but is still only available through access to Labs.
  • Google's Duet AI is a generative AI tool for productivity and works across Google's suite of cloud-based Workspace apps.

Google is reportedly working on adding voice support to its AI-assisted email drafting feature. Dubbed “Help Me Write” the company launched the AI tool in June last year but is still only available through access to Labs, Google’s testing ground for new AI features.

The feature which is an expansion of the auto-replies and generative text that Google already uses in Gmail, uses generative AI to help users draft emails. While at the moment the functionality only supports written prompts, according to TheSpAndroid, it appears that soon users might be able to use it with their voice.

Once this feature is officially rolled out, when writing an email, the voice typing interface will open automatically with a microphone button that a user can tap and speak the prompt which will show up above the voice recording button. After the prompt is recorded, you can then hit “create” which generates an email draft that can be edited.

The US search engine and tech giant has previously introduced several AI-related features across its tools and services. For instance, in May last year, the company introduced Duet AI, its generative AI tool for productivity. The AI Assistant works across Google’s suite of cloud-based Workspace apps including Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet, and Google Chat.

“We’ve been thrilled to see how people have started using these tools to help them get things done at work and in their personal lives — including client outreach emails, job applications, project plans, and so much more.” wrote Google Workspace’s GM and Vice President, Aparna Pappu in a blog post.

Google has not yet officially announced the voice prompt feature for Help Me Write but we can expect the announcement soon.
