Facebook’s Trending News Topics will now be Automated

Facebook is changing  the way it shows you trending topics, the company said in a blog post. As of last weekend, the social networking forum got rid of the explanatory descriptions altogether and rolled out a cleaner, simpler version of the updated Facebook trending topics list.

The latest iteration of Facebook’s trending topics is highlighted below, right next to the version we’re all familiar with. As you can see in the image, the new one looks closer to Twitter’s version, doing away with the description and instead listing only the topics that are trending, as well as how many people are talking about them.

Facebook said it’s altering the trending topic list in order to “increase the scalability and personalization of the product “Our goal is to enable Trending for as many people as possible, which would be hard to do if we relied solely on summarizing topics by hand. A more algorithmically driven process allows us to scale Trending to cover more topics and make it available to more people globally over time. This is something we always hoped to do but we are making these changes sooner given the feedback we got from the Facebook community earlier this year.” according to the blog post

In place of the description, Facebook will now tell you how many people are talking about a given topic.
