Kenyan police ‘addicted’ to Facebook

Police officers in Kenya have been warned by a top official not to spend too much time on the social networking website Facebook while on duty. Police officers in the country have been using Twitter and Facebook to engage with their neighbouring communities. They have also reportedly used the online services to mobilise support against criminal gangs. But the district commissioner of Murang’a South, Muktar Ali, has complained that some officers, who have smartphones, are

using Facebook excessively while on duty, resulting in them being distracted from doing their jobs.

“Some of them are on Facebook all the time and browse the internet using their phones while working, and they can easily be targeted by bad elements,” said Ali.

The district commissioner has said that police officers must stay alert at all times, so as to carry out their duties effectively.

“A police officer must be alert all the time while on duty but some officers are spending a lot of time on the social sites rather than remain keen on their work,” said Ali.
