MTN Kampala Marathon 2010 Winners update

By A CorrespondentJacob Arapmarich came in a jubilant first in the 21km leg of the MTN Kampala Marathon 2010 while Moses Kibet led the field in the 10km leg this morning, making Uganda proud winners of the shorter two categories of the international event. The MTN Kampala Marathon also dubbed ‘yellow sunday’ kicked off at about 6:00am with close to 20,000 participants from around the world running the 10km, 21km and 42km races.

Among participants were professional athletes Moses Kipsiro, double Gold medalist at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India, earlier this year, who came fourth in the 10km and Moses Kibet winner of the 10km race.

The MTN Kampala Marathon 2010 is the eighth edition of the highly billed annual event and is on the international athletics calendar. The euphoric, yellow-clad atheletes filled the streets of Kampala City and its suburbs on the three routes around the city, while thousands of streetside on-lookers cheered them on.

Proceeds from the Marathon will go towards improving water and sanitation in Uganda, through a project that will be determined by a cross section of stakeholders. MTN announced that potential implementing partners will be invited to openly bid for projects that will be evaluated by an independent panel.

The MTN Kampala Marathon 2009 collected Ushs172million (US$90,000) for a water project benefitting 25,000 people in Lamwo District, in northern Uganda.
