For those unaware, government regulatory body of the communications sector; Uganda Communication Commission (UCC) in March gave a directive to stop sales for airtime scratch cards in favor of electronic points of sales and distribution.
Little is known why commission issued such a directive, but it was rumored that this came after airtime vendors illegally increased retail prices for airtime scratch cards which telcos denied any knowledge of the increment in rates even though vendors claimed they were advised by their distributors to effect the increase.
When contacted, MTN Uganda Manager for Corporate Communications, Val Okecho told PC Tech Magazine that they had received reports of the increase before apologizing for the inconveniences caused.
“We have noted complaints raised and we apologize for the inconvenience caused by agents who have decided to impose their own recommended retail prices of our airtime vouchers,” Okecho he said.
Anyways, its rumored that airtime scratch cards might be terminated effective July 1st, 2018. All telco customers will be subjected to use mobile money, Agent’s Easy Load, PayWay, Mula App, Pebuu, any other electronic payment option.[related-posts]
