RWANDA: Health Workers Banned from Using Phones at Work

Health practitioners in Rwanda will not be allowed to use mobile phones during working hours, effective March 1st 2017.

The collective decision was reached in a health retreat which had attracted hospital managers, administrators, District leaders, Health practitioners and officials from the Ministry of Health.

Also in attendance at the retreat was Dr Diane Gashumba, Rwanda’s Minister of Health.

Speaking to Rwandan local press, Malick Kayumba, the Ministry of Health spokesperson said the decision is not superimposed but rather a consensus reached among health practitioners following self-evaluation.

“The decision has not been imposed by the ministry rather a consensus from their discussions. The decision came out as they evaluated themselves on health service delivery,” Kayumba said.

The Rwandan governance Scorecard presented on January 31st, 2017 indicated that health service delivery scored low compared to other sectors at 72.93% last year.
