How to Mute (and Unmute) WhatsApp Notifications

When WhatsApp notifications get distracting, muting them can help you focus.

By default, WhatsApp sends push notifications with sound alerts each time you receive messages from someone or in a group. While the default settings can be okay to some, to others it is annoying. So, if you’re not part of those that prefer these default settings and get irritated with these sounds, WhatsApp has a ‘Mute’ feature that can help you catch a break when conversations become a bother (this applies to if you have your settings on vibration).

In this article, we’ll share with you the steps you can take to un/mute WhatsApp Notifications on both Android and iPhone.

Note: Muting someone doesn’t apply to WhatsApp groups. You will still get notifications when the muted user sends a message to a group you’re both in.

Mute/Unmute WhatsApp Notifications on Android

Muting both individual and group conversations on your Android is very simple. Here’s how to go about it.

Step 1: Open WhatsApp, and tap Chats.
Step 2: Tap and hold on to the chat you want to mute until a green circle appears, then tap the speaker icon in the top right.
Step 3: Choose the length of time you want to mute the conversation for, then click OK.

Note: If you wish to unmute a chat, tap and hold the chat you want to unmute until the green circle appears, then tap the speaker icon in the top right corner of the screen to unmute the chat.

Mute/Unmute WhatsApp Notifications on iPhone

Whether you want to mute and unmute individual or group notifications, Here’s how to go about it on iPhone.

Step 1: Open the WhatsApp App on your iPhone and tap Chats.
Step 2: Tap the chat you wish to mute, slide your finger to the left, then tap More >> Mute.
Step 3: Choose the length of time you want to mute the conversation for. Once muted, a speaker with a line through it appears to the right of the chat.

Note: In case you want to unmute a chat you’ve muted, slide your finger to the left, then tap More >> Unmute.

Also, keep in mind that the person you muted or unmuted will not receive a notification from WhatsApp letting them know that they have been muted/unmuted. Similarly, you cannot tell if someone muted you, either.
