4 Ugandan Aspiring Filmmakers Selected For The 3rd Cohort of MTF Program

4 Ugandans are among the 60 aspiring and passionate young filmmakers selected to for the 2022 cohort of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) program.

MultiChoice has selected 60 aspiring and passionate young filmmakers from East Africa, Southern Africa, and West Africa for the 2022 cohort of the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) program—and they will in October this year begin their 12-month training program at the MTF Academy hubs in Nairobi, Lagos, and Lusaka.

The final candidates selected from 13 African countries, Uganda inclusive were selected after a rigorous interview and adjudication process by film and television experts, as well as regional Academy Directors.

The four (4) Ugandans selected for the program are; Ann Nassanga, Justine Nabunya, Phillip Sentamu, and Ivan Tusabe.

Ms. Joan Semanda Kizza congratulated and applauded the four Ugandans that made it as finalists because it was a complex selection.

“I would especially like to applaud the Ugandan entrants because the selection of these top four candidates was more complex this time around. The reason for the complexity was because of the caliber of students that we interviewed. In turn, it goes to show that the interest and the output of the film industry have improved greatly since 2018,” Semanda said.

Semanda encouraged the students to take this training seriously as history has proven to them (MultiChoice) that MTF has been a gateway to great openings and opportunities in the film and television industry to most of our alumni students,” she added.

Multichoice Uganda in 2019 took on the first cohort of students who have since progressed into contributors to the Uganda film industry —and joined the MTF alumni network.

MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) has honed the skills of 120 emerging filmmakers in 13 African countries, who are now part of the growing MTF alumni network, taking African stories to the world.

Semanda said the alumni from the MTF program continue to make the company proud each and every single day. Adding that platforms like MTF have allowed MultiChoice to foster the development of our film industry through skilling and equipping programs for all filmmakers.

The success of any academic program can be measured by the contribution made by alumni in the industry. MTF carried out a survey to find out how MTF academies are continuing to ignite Africa’s creative industries —and in their findings, from the inaugural class of 2019, 92% of the students are economically active in the film industry. According to CEO: General Entertainment & Connected Video Yolisa Phahle, this is exactly what the industry needs and why MTF was launched.

“As Africa’s most loved storyteller, our commitment is not only to tell authentic African stories but to also invest in them, that is why some of our alumni are working on M-Net and Showmax productions,” said Phahle.

Phahle went on to say that they currently have alumni in 7 countries working on M-Net and Showmax productions with the list keep growing. “They are helping us to realize the vision of taking African stories to the world with a ‘hyperlocal’ approach, producing relevant content within the respective regions of our continent, as opposed to a one-size-fits-all strategy,” she said.

The MTF academy’s curriculum was tailored alongside MultiChoice Africa partner institutions Pan-Atlantic University in Lagos, Kenyatta University in Nairobi, and the University of Zambia in Lusaka, which will respectively confer the course qualification upon completion of the academy program. In addition, The Henley Business School offers an orientation intervention to the students at the beginning and end of the 12-month program as well workshops on Business for Creatives focussing on entrepreneurship.

The academy also provides resources for industry professionals across Africa. The second pillar, the MTF masterclass initiative is aimed at upskilling industry professionals and emerging creatives alike by offering exclusive access to practical, expert-led industry skills workshops across Africa. Through these masterclasses, MTF has trained over 1,000 creatives since 2019. The MTF Portal is a third pillar, a pan-African digital marketplace for the over 40,000 creatives who are registered which provides access to free online masterclasses and profiling opportunities.
