Makerere, Muni To Participate at the Huawei ICT Global Competition in China

Makerere and Muni University students have topped the Sub-Saharan Africa Huawei Global ICT Competition and will represent Uganda at the Huawei ICT global finals in China in May 2022.

Huawei has today announced the results of the 2021/22 Sub Saharan Africa Huawei ICT Competition that saw Makerere and Muni Unversity topple 15 African Countries to take first and second positions respectively —and therefore shall proceed to compete in the Huawei ICT global finals in China in May 2022.

The competition had over 15,000 participants from 500 universities in 15 African countries participating in the competition under the theme “Connection, Glory, Future”, where 38 teams sat for ICT-related written and laboratory exams. A total of 15 students from Uganda —12 from Makerere University and 3 from Muni University took part in the competition which saw them topple the first and second positions respectively.

Michelle Chemutai, a Telecom Engineer at Makerere University expressed her gratitude for the exposure Huawei had accorded to her and the entire Ugandan team. “The competition was very intimidating and at the same time exciting. The thought of competing with ‘creme de la creme’ teams from different African Countries was frightening. Taking the first position made me really feel good about myself and increased my self-confidence. Thanks to Huawei,” she said.

Chemutai said the competition was a new experience for her as an individual. “It taught me teamwork and coordination and that hard work actually pays off. This competition literally forced us to give in our best. Also, I got a lot of exposure in the network field and learned how to do the practical lab configurations that aren’t taught at the university.”

Globally the Huawei ICT Competition has covered over 80 countries, with 150,000 participants from more than 2,000 universities and colleges. Launched in the African region just six years ago, the competition has developed into the largest ICT skills competition in Africa. With a series of talent ecosystem campaigns in Sub-Saharan Africa, including the ICT competition, Huawei hopes to skill up more than 700,000 ICT professionals by next year.
