Job Opportunity: Principal Database Administrator- Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO)

 

The Lake Victoria Fisheries Organization (LVFO) is an institution of the East African Community with the mandate to promote Sustainable Management and Development of Fisheries & Aquaculture in the East African Community for Food Security and Wealth creation. The Organization is seeking to recruit a Principal Database Administrator from the Contracting Partner States to coordinate Information Systems Management activities in liaison with other programs.

Duty Station: Jinja, Uganda

Job Purpose:

The personnel will be a professional officer at the LVFO Secretariat responsible for all functions associated with the efficient design, implementation and maintenance (performance, integrity and security) of all database managements systems (Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL and others).

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical support for the organization’s Database Management Systems
  • Administer a variety of Database Management Systems
  • Identify, meet database user needs and work closely with stakeholders and other cost centres to resolve incidents affecting corporate service availability and functionality
  • Recommends solutions by defining database physical structure and functional capabilities, database 
security, data back-up, and recovery specifications
  • Install and test new versions of Database Management Systems and other tools needed for desired functionality
  • Control migrations of database applications, changes and programs ensuring compatibility
  • Ensure that database storage, archiving, back-up and recovery procedures are functioning correctly
  • Carry out database documentation including but not limited to data standards, database systems interface, procedures and data dictionary definitions (metadata)
  • Plan and coordinate security measures alongside network and cyber security administrators
  • Working closely with National Database Developers and other relevant Working Groups on data and database related activities
  • Evaluate and recommend new/relevant database technologies to meet the organisation’s needs
  • Communicate regularly with IT stakeholders, supervisors and management regarding the status of Database Management Systems
  • Write reports on Information Systems Management when required
  • 
 Perform any other IT related tasks assigned by his/her supervisors

Qualifications and Experience:

  • A first degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering or a related field;
  • A master’s degree in a related field will be an added advantage;
  • Professional Certification e.g. OCP, MCDBA, MySQL-DBA is a requirement;
  • Familiarity with computer operating systems (Windows and Linux) and database technology (design, install, maintain, modify, and upgrade database software and structure) is essential;
  • At least five years’ experience and demonstrated competence in administering database management systems, preferably Microsoft SQL, Oracle and MYSQL Server;
  • Innovative, team builder and ability to work with minimum supervision;
  • Ability to perform acceptance testing on computer systems, applications, and hardware;
  • Technical writing skills; Knowledge in scripting languages;
  • Excellent spoken and written English language skills.

Terms and Conditions of Service:

  • 5 years renewable subject to satisfactory performance
