MTN Uganda Donates Shs30m to Rotary Blood Bank Program

MTN Uganda has injected Shs30 million as a contribution towards Rotary Blood Bank fundraising concert slated to take place on Sunday February 26th.

The fundraiser concert that will feature renowned South African jazz legend Hugh Masekela alongside Ugandan sax ace Isaiah Katumwa will also mark 60 years of Rotary in Uganda.

All proceeds from the concert will go towards equipping and operationalizing the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital and the construction of Mukono Rotary Hospital.

According to MTN officials, the contribution is in alignment with MTN’s commitment to making customers lives a whole lot brighter through investment in impactful and sustainable community initiatives.

MTN CEO Vanhellepute hands over a dummy 30million cheque to Rotary Officials on Saturday.

Uganda has a population of over 35 million and needs a minimum of 340,000 units of safe blood per year. The only one Government owned organization, Uganda Blood Bank Transfusion Service (UBTS) does not have adequate facilities to collect and store blood.

The situation is made worse by the influx of patients needing blood from neighboring countries which leaves an annual deficit of over 100,000 units of safe blood.

The Rotary Blood Bank program will be one of the largest public service initiatives taken up by the Rotary Clubs in Rotary District 9211. The Blood Bank is a 7,500 sq.ft. fully equipped state of the art facility that has been set up on 800sq. Meters building in Mengo hospital.
