Cente Tech Secures Land in Masaka To Build a Tier 3 Data Centre

Cente Tech toured a land in Masaka that has been earmarked as the site for the construction of a Tier 3 Data Centre that will be funded by Centenary Group.

The Ag. CEO of Cente Tech Dr. Grace Ssekakubo and CTO of Cente Tech, Peter Kahiigi this morning toured a land in Masaka that has been earmarked as the site for the construction of a Tier 3 Data Centre that will be funded by Centenary Group.

The industry-grade data centre will be a key asset to serve Centenary Group’s growth strategy; delivering secure, reliable, high-performance data center, cloud, and interconnection solutions to the Group’s growing subsidiaries and customer ecosystem across Uganda and the region at large.

The data centre will be the first Tier 3 Data Centre outside of Kampala and is deliberate as part of Centenary Group’s intention to use financial services as an intervention for eradicating poverty among the rural poor and improving their standard of living.

While addressing the media, Dr. Grace Ssekakubo said, the construction of the data centre will be a transformative milestone in the growth of Centenary Group to further expand its infrastructure to aid the success of the Group’s subsidiaries and customers in the private sector. “We believe that the planned enterprise-class, Tier 3 Data Centre will be extremely well suited to meet our customers’ needs,” she said.

Centenary Group created Centenary Technology (Cente-Tech) Service Ltd to play a key role in placing the Group’s subsidiary companies at the center of customers’ digital transformation and accelerate the Group’s digital agenda. Cente-Tech is committed to use technology to sustainably progress the digital foundation of the connected world with a focus on the Centenary Group’s subsidiaries and its customers.

The data centre industry is gradually growing in Uganda and functions in many parts of the business such as data backup, networking, website hosting, email management, and security. Of recent, Raxio Group formally launched the Raxio Data Centre in Uganda after nearly three years in construction. The data centre is a Certified Tier 3 Data Centre and is located in Namave Industrial & Business Park, a highway to Kenya where Uganda picks up Sub Marine Fibre capacity and thus about 8 fiber connections to Mombasa for internet transit.

The government of Uganda also has a Tier III data centre in Jinja, and it was formally launched by President Museveni in 2019 as a strategy for the government to provide a centralized hosting service for its data and applications.

Uganda is estimated to have at least 10 data centres both government and privately owned.

A Tier 3 data center combines and exceeds features and capabilities of Tier 1 and Tier 2 data centers but with redundant capacity and data center infrastructure components. It is the third level/tier of data centers introduced by the Uptime Institute. Tier 4 data centre is the most complex and has the most redundant components.
