Twitter New Update Introduces Bookmark Counts on Tweets

Twitter adds Bookmark Counts to tweets so users can know how many times a tweet has been saved for later.

Elon Musk’s Twitter has added yet another public metric to tweets. The microblogging website has introduced “Bookmarks” which will show users the total number of times their tweet has been bookmarked. Currently, the feature is on showing for iOS users and will be expanded to all users gradually, according to Twitter’s help site. The site, however, did not mention when it will be made available.

While anyone on Twitter can see your Bookmark counts on tweets, this new metric doesn’t show who has bookmarked the tweet, unlike other metrics like retweets and tweet likes. The Bookmarks are private and are only viewable to you within your Twitter account.

“Bookmarks are still private and are only viewable to you within your Twitter account. We only show the total number of Bookmarks, not the specific accounts that have added a Tweet to their Bookmarks,” Twitter wrote on its Help Center website.

Elon Musk while responding to a Twitter user said, “If your tweet is bookmarked, it will be treated as a “quiet like” and increment your likes counter.”

The Bookmark Count feature was first announced on Jan. 20 in a tweet by the platform’s boss, Elon Musk. In a tweet, he wrote, “Major Twitter improvement we just released is that you can now bookmark tweets from tweet details page. Importantly, bookmarks are *private*, unlike likes. No one other than you can see your bookmarks.”

The feature was later spotted on Feb. 15 by Jane Manchun Wong, a reverse engineering expert who often discovers new features being added to apps before they officially roll out —which will later be made official starting March 16th but limited to iOS users.

The Bookmark Count feature is one of many updates Elon Musk has had the microblogging website introduce since his $44 billion takeover in October last year. The social networking platform has had several upgrades among which include tweet view counts that have been criticized and called useless by users, the removal of tweet labels, the display of algorithmic & chronological timelines side-by-side, and the revision of Twitter Blue, among others.
