Huawei Partners with Orange Uganda in Community Innovations Awards

huaweiHuawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, partnered with Orange Uganda for the Community Innovations Awards 2013, an annual competition for university students to develop mobile apps that are relevant to community issues in the areas of health, education and agriculture.

The event was officiated by the Rt. Hon. Prime Minister of the Republic of Uganda, Hon Amama Mbabazi, who  expressed his appreciation towards the noble initiative of empowering young innovators to make contributions to the community by using acquired skills and knowledge. This year’s competition attracted 72 entries, with 20 of them managed shortlisted for the finalists.

‘The Community Innovations Awards initiative has provided an excellent platform for the  students to develop mobile apps that are relevant to meet community needs in the areas of health, education, and agriculture.’ Said Radoslaw Kedzia, Managing Director of Huawei Technologies Uganda.

He added

‘Developing local ICT talents through knowledge transfer initiatives is core in our CSR strategy for Uganda and Africa at large to help bridging the digital divide. As a global ICT leader, keen on innovation, encouraging young innovators is both a responsibility and an obligation for us. ’

 

Huawei provided 50 pieces of Ascend Y300 smartphone for prizes to the winners, and platform for the contestants’ applications development. In additional the company provided a devices specialist as part of the judging panelists.

The awards aim to promote young people’s talent for developing mobile applications that can help both the local and international community.
