Earlier this week, Tecno Mobile launched its Camon 50 Series in the Ugandan market after weeks of teasers. The series in Uganda comes in two variants, the Camon 50 and Camon 50 Pro, with both models sharing similar specifications and features; however, the Pro version stands out with a curved screen and a 3× telephoto camera.
The Tecno Camon 50 Pro is priced at UGX1,190,00 and comes in Moonlight Black, Malachite Green, Fir Green, Lavender Mist, and Mint Cream color options. The phone has been available for purchase at all Tecno stores nationwide, Jumia, and at MTN Uganda service centres. MTN also offers 3GB of data for 3 months.
For its price tag, the Camon 50 Pro is a solid contender in the mid-range and budget-friendly space. It packs AI tools, robust hardware, long battery life, and practical connectivity features aimed at creators and everyday users who want flagship features without flagship prices.
Upon purchase, the package is the same —clean, minimal, and consistent with the brand’s standard retail presentation. So what you see on the shelf is exactly what you get; neatly sealed, which gives that satisfying “fresh out of the box” experience.
Lifting the lid, the phone is positioned right at the top, neatly wrapped in a protective film. Beneath it, you’ll typically find the essentials arranged in a compact layout: a transparent plastic phone case, a Type-C charging cable, a 45-watt power adapter, a SIM ejector tool, and user documentation. Everything is carefully compartmentalized, making the unboxing process feel organized and intentional rather than cluttered. It’s straightforward. The consistency ensures buyers know exactly what to expect, and the clean presentation reinforces the device’s premium appeal from the very first moment.
The phone feels remarkably light in the hand, and its smooth, curved edges make it especially comfortable to hold. During the launch event, many critics and attendees also highlighted this as one of its most striking first impressions. In addition to the remarkable weight, the 6.78-inch curved AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution and a 144Hz refresh rate was also a major talking point, and a feature worth liking.
The display immediately stands out for its immersive look and fluid responsiveness. The curved panel blends seamlessly into the frame, giving the device a premium, almost bezel-less appearance from certain angles. Scrolling feels incredibly smooth thanks to the 144Hz refresh rate, while the AMOLED panel offers vibrant colors and deep contrast.
While we’ll reserve a deeper dive into brightness levels, color accuracy, and real-world performance for the full review, the early impression is clear: the combination of lightweight design and a high-refresh curved display creates a device that looks premium and feels refined in everyday use.
Under the hood, it runs on the MediaTek Helio G200 Ultimate processor, which is a slight upgrade on the G100 found in its predecessor. Now, a normal user who isn’t so critical of specs wouldn’t notice this. But the Helio G200 is essentially a slightly enhanced version of the Helio G100, offering minimal performance boosts but better power optimization. It is designed to provide a “premium” 4G experience for budget devices such as the Camon 50 series.
The Camon 50 Pro comes with Android 16, and Tecno promises up to three major Android upgrades, which is a reassuring commitment for long-term software support. Performance impressions will come later, but on first boot, everything feels snappy and well-optimized.
On the hardware side, while the Camon 50 comes with a dual camera setup, the Pro version features a 3× telephoto camera allowing users to snap distant photos (zoomed to approx. 3–5×) while keeping the photos sharp, and Tecno’s software can also enhance cropped (30–60×) zoom shots reasonably well.
When it comes to performance and everyday usability, battery life remains one of the most critical features in any smartphone. In fact, after the camera, battery capacity is often one of the first specifications buyers consider. Generally, the larger the battery, the better the endurance, and that’s clearly a priority here, with the 6,150mAh unit packed into the Camon 50 Pro.
The Camon 50 Pro comes with IP69K / IP69 / IP68 ingress protection, which is a big plus for durability. This offers resistance against dust, water (high-pressure water jets; immersible up to 2m for 30 min), and drops.
One feature that has been placed more emphasis on is Ella, Tecno’s AI that aims to improve users’ productivity and also enhance their creativity. The experience spans across the device, from an AI-enhanced camera system to a built-in smart assistant, ensuring artificial intelligence supports both creativity and everyday productivity.
Ella has been designed to be constantly available, helping users manage daily tasks such as scheduling appointments, setting flight reminders, and handling general voice commands. By embedding AI across multiple functions, the Camon series aims to deliver a seamless, hands-free smartphone experience that adapts to users’ routines.
Again, with these first impressions, the Camon 50 Pro can be considered as a solid contender in mid-entry and budget smartphones.
