MOGO Uganda Launches a Smartphone Loan Service to Boost Penetration in the Country

MOGO Uganda’ collaboration with Airtel Uganda and Transsion Holdings will allow customers to acquire their desired Tecno, Infinix, or itel smartphone with a minimal initial deposit of just 28% of the device’s cost, starting as low as UGX848 per day.

It is common knowledge that many Ugandans face challenges accessing smartphones due to cost. In a country where the average monthly income is around UGX190,000 to UGX380,000 for many, even budget smartphones priced at UGX380,000 is unaffordable for a large portion of the population.

For this, the government working together with private companies are working around the clock to increase smartphone penetration. This is being done by subsidies & tax incentives, producing cost-effective smartphones with essential features, financing options such as MOGO Uganda’s newly launched smartphone loan service.

MOGO Uganda, a leading asset financing company, today launched its smartphone loan service, in a strategic partnership with Airtel Uganda, to make Tecno, Infinix, and itel devices accessible to more Ugandans. This initiative addresses the growing demand for affordable smartphone ownership, empowering individuals to connect, learn, and thrive in the digital age.

“This partnership is a game-changer for digital inclusion. By offering affordable financing for quality smartphones, we’re breaking down barriers and enabling Ugandans to access essential digital tools for education, business, and communication,” Douglas Kikonyogo, Marketing and Communications Manager at MOGO Uganda told PC Tech Magazine.

“Many Ugandans cite affordability as a key issue when it comes to accessing smartphones, alongside other factors like limited network coverage and electricity access,” he adds. “Feature phones are more common in rural areas, but smartphones are increasingly needed for digital services.”

Through this collaboration, customers can acquire their desired Tecno, Infinix, or itel smartphone with a minimal initial deposit of just 28% of the device’s cost, starting as low as UGX848 per day. The remaining balance can be paid in flexible daily, weekly, or monthly installments over up to 52 weeks, tailored to fit individual budgets.

The application process is seamless, requiring only a national ID and a mobile-money-registered SIM card—no collateral or proof of income needed. Customers can apply at any Airtel Uganda outlets or with MOGO’s authorized agents, with approvals often granted in under 15 minutes.
